SAN JOSE, Calif. — South Korea's SJ Tech Co., a supplier of wafer carrier, chip tray and other products, on Tuesday (Dec. 28) said it had a dedication ceremony for its new factory in Kaesong, North Korea, according to the Korea Times .
SJ Tech, headquartered in Kyonggi Province, is said to be the second South Korean company operating in the inter-Korean industrial complex, located just north of the heavily fortified demilitarized zone, according to the report.
The company's factory, which employs around 70 North Korean workers, will produce chip carrier products for IC fabs. The total investment is 4 billion won (US$3.6 million).
The factory plans to enter mass production next month and employ 200 more workers next year, according to the report.
In December, Livingart, a Seoul-based kitchenware maker, began operations in a factory in Kaesong, the report said. In August 2000, Hyundai Asan agreed with North Korea to develop a 20-million-pyong (66 million square meter) complex in Kaesong. The first phase of construction is currently underway for housing 300 companies, with completion aimed for 2007, according to the report.
